FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW MUCH DO LOCKSMITHS USUALLY CHARGE?
A local Locksmith may charge between £45 - £100 as a minimum charge depending on the time of day, travel time, and job complexity. A simple job within 5 miles should be between £45 - £60. For simple jobs like gaining house access, we charge £45. There are also costs of supplying materials, size of the job, labour time, and cost of tools, meaning there is no upper limited to the cost. We quote you as accurately as possible with the information you provide, however, we always explain if there is a likelihood of changes to this price should something more become apparent in the job diagnosis, or you make any special requests.
WILL A LOCKSMITH RIP ME OFF?
There are two types of Locksmith to be wary of. The first you will often find on the top 3 results of Google Ads. These are often national companies that hire sub-contractors to complete work, without necessary training or experience. They are well known in the trade to over-charge and under-perform. The second to watch out for are "driller killers". They will drill every lock they encounter, to ensure they can charge you for a new lock, usually at a rip-off price. We always use non-destructive methods, and we will always persevere with this as our top priority.
HOW CAN I TELL IF A LOCKSMITH IS TRUSTWORTHY?
There are many people online claiming to be locksmiths. "Locksmith" is not a protected title and you do not need to be registered with a regulatory body. Most rogue locksmiths will not likely have a genuine website, so this is a great first filter. You can also check their Google Reviews (these are far less likely to be fake vs other sites). Websites like Checkatrade also have a vetting process and require public liability insurance and proof of qualifications. Never trust anyone who cannot show you a website or online reviews. Always choose a local locksmith with genuine local connections. See this great youtube video from BBC Rogue Traders to understand.
WILL A LOCKSMITH CHARGE ME VAT, A CALL OUT FEE OR 'SAME DAY BOOKING' FEE?
We have seen customers charged £90 for a 'same day booking' fee; and we often hear about a surprise VAT charge never discussed until an invoice is produced. In our opinion, this is totally unreasonable and unfair. If you are quoted over the phone, always ask if there will be any VAT or any other charges added to that price. It is normal for prices to change whilst on the job, because of unforseen or undisclosed issues with locks or hardware. Issues around door mechanisms can be expensive due to the cost of parts and time related to supply and fit the part; such as ID of the part, driving to the supplier and fitting time. We always offer the most cost-effective solution for you.
